Thion is an abandoned forest village, there's no real mystery about it or any real reason for it being abandoned just the people who once lived here moved on and decided that a forest city wasn't really for them. They all packed up and moved away leaving such wonderful architecture for others.
However this place has been abandoned for many years and now people will find it's host to a variety of monsters and beasts. Dragons and Wyverns are said to live in the surrounding forest, however Wyverns will attack on sight and can be easily identified for they walk on two legs, have no forearms or front legs only wings, are relatively small and are incredibly hostile. Wyverns don't particularly use fire either, they use lightning as their chosen element.
Dragons on the other hand a re much larger speak before attacking and if a dragon does attack you? It's probably a misunderstanding, either that or they've gone mad.
Either way this place is dangerous and if you can befriend the dragons they may help you clear out the buildings of Thion, for a price of course.
There are chocobo that stay around the forest, though they're incredibly difficult to catch and there's not a huge amount of them.
